The Art of Simplicity: Brandy Melville

NYC Girl Tank

One of the most upcoming stores lately has been Brandy Melville, a trendy shop with a boutique vibe. I’m definitely not the first to do any sort of blog post on this store, but as it keeps getting more and more popular, I wanted to publish something on it!

I first visited Brandy Melville about two years ago at their Soho location in New York City. Since then, they have expanded so much – in fact, they have opened up two locations much closer to where I live! When I revisited the Soho store a year after my first trip, it was packed with people. The Soho store is where most Brandy fans journey to, almost treating it as an important tourist site alongside the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island! As a result, it gets SUPER crowded and picked over, to the extent where the store is just a mess with teenage girls digging through piles of clothing!

Yesterday, I visited one of the stores closer to my house and had a much more pleasant shopping experience. Except for a few other people browsing, my mom and I basically had the store to ourselves, making it easier to shop around and then try on everything. Brandy Melville’s clothing is one size fits all on almost all their items, so for me, it’s kind of important to see what it looks like on before I go ahead and buy.

When I made my very first trip to the store in Soho, I wasn’t really sure how I felt about it overall. It’s extremely trendy, but also carries a ton of basics you can dress up or dress down in tons of different ways. After visiting again, I have to say, I do like the clothes (and the moderate prices are a plus!).

Recently, Brandy has become notorious for their quirky graphic tees/tanks as well as apparel with quotes from the movie Mean Girls (ex. “You Can’t Sit With Us” is plastered onto everything from t-shirts to beanies). In general, most of their pieces are extremely simple, with just a few words or a faded picture, but everyone is loving it, including me! For Summer 2013, choosing simplicity in outfits seems to be a likely route for most girls.

I picked up a few items that will be great for this summer:

NYC Girl Tank – I love this flow-y tank! Great to wear casually with a pair of shorts or as a bathing suit cover up.

Chiyo Top – These bralettes are so versatile and fun! I also got it in a mint color.

I also got a super soft sweatshirt and a plain white t-shirt. Both of which are basics, but things I know I will be able to wear many times.
